Main Bar
There are two bars at The Brown. If you want to meet the real locals or fancy yourself a bit of a sports fan, head for the Main Bar. With all you'd expect from a true New Zealand pub bar, you'll find TAB, Sky TV, jackpot gaming machines, jukebox and a sports tipping competition.
With 11 TV screens and 2 Sky decoders, you'll never miss your favourite big game or race in the Main Bar and there are lots of great viewing spots at the tables and macrocarpa leaners. This bar has had a major facelift - we love the new look and hope you will too!
There's always something going on in the bar - we organise fun one off events such as fancy dress theme nights, Bush poetry, Country Music, fun customer trips such as fishing trips, a night out at the Addington trots or a tour of the ski fields, and a "Pluck Off' at the start of the duck shooting season. There are monthly events like the lucky losers draw for "non-winning' TAB punters and a Spin the Wheel Major draw for the Friday night crowd. The Brown will also host the annual sheep shearing competition (they just feed the sheep in and out through the windows...) and then there's the annual fishing competition that sees a wide range of locals of all ages involved.
The most entertaining nights can be the ones that just develop naturally. When everyone's in a "shake that money maker" mood and we find ourselves moving the tables and pumping up the jukebox to dance up a storm. There can be the nights where there's a modest crowd of around thirty or forty but we end up cranking up the karaoke and discovering many hidden talents (and some not so talented as well...you know who you are!)
Of course it may just be a handful of locals who get to chatting to the numerous passers through who come to Methven to check out the mountains, rivers or lakes and end up feeling right at home at The Brown and deciding to extend their stay.
